Starting out as a union apprentice, I worked my way up through the camera department on feature films, television dramas, commercials and documentaries. I completed my formal training at the Royal College of Art, shooting six award winning films and winning the Kodak commercial cinematography and Metz 35mm film drama awards.
I shot for ten years with Drama credits including The Waiting Room for Asif Kapadia, Drama Docs including The Man who Drove with Mandela for Greta Schiller. Documentary credits including Portrait or Bust with Alan Bennett, Waste Man with Anthony Gormley and Life through a Lens with Robbie Williams.
After starting a family, I lived in the UK, UAE and Caribbean, made several documentary shorts and shot and lectured widely. I rounded off my time teaching, by writing ‘An Introduction to Cinematography: Learning through Practice for Focal Press. This book is now used widely on cinematography courses at universities including UCLA and USC. It won the inaugural Taylor Francis best new textbook in humanities and media arts award 2018.
I am currently working primarily in documentary on a range of projects from international feature docs to environmental films and current affairs or investigative documentaries for BBC South East. I bring a combination of personal and cinematographic skills and life experience that works well in a wide range of documentary situations. I have very good sequence building and lighting (including the creative use of available light) skills and a wide knowledge of cameras and digital formats. I am confident at recording sound and have very good interviewing skills when needed.
In overseas work, several of my projects have involved finding and filming communities that are hard to access. I have a friendly, flexible approach but a strong drive to capture the spirit of a story.
I also have several drama and commercial cinematography awards and love helping bring scripts to life with a director working with light, colour and design. I am very open to shooting projects of all size and scale.
I have exhibited photography internationally and run still photography workshops at www.imagesofcanterbury.co.uk
I teach as a guest lecturer at several UK universities using clear practical workshops and guidance that allow students to learn through practice using equipment they have available.
